What makes a film a psychodrama? In my opinion, the film has to be one that deals with psychological struggles in one or more of the principal protagonists. Furthermore, the psychic problem must be something more, in magnitude or kind, than what is routinely experienced by ordinary people. One or more of the adult characters, I would argue, must have a psychiatric or neurological issue of diagnosable proportions whether or not it has been actually diagnosed. Furthermore, the film must examine the issue in a manner that lends itself to psychological analysis by the viewer.

Technically, however, a psychodrama, not applicable to this forum, is a diagnostic and treatment device used clinically, in which the patients act out parts in a dramatic representation.
Thanks. I sorta understand, but my perspective on film and psychology is different enough that it just doesn't fit enough to be usable for me as a label. Many films are metaphorical journeys and explore inner work on an external stage. You just have to look deeper to see the linkages. In other cases, they are so obvious they are almost cartoonish, like Dorothy in "Wizard of Oz" building on the characters from around her farm, who were also extensions of her inner work. The Shakespeare plays and subsequent films also reflect a type of psychodrama. Film is, almost by definition, psychodrama as expressed by writer, director, or in some cases various combinations of cast/crew/writer.
