I think most that have not seen it probably do think it is a comedy. Another poster and I just discussed that FG is the only one to NOT crash/burn in the film and that he overcomes all his obstacles. Now THAT is inspiring!

I was supposed to go see 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' when I was a little girl with my Dad (this ages me, I suppose) and at the last minute he was called away ( he was a volunteer fireman) to a large house fire, and I never got to go with him. He was fine, but my friend's house was destroyed and for some reason I equated that movie with the memory, and it took me years to see it.
Forrest Gump was intended as a dramedy. It definitely has comedic elements. Not to laugh at the protagonist for being dim but just situational comedy as well as dramatic elements.
I've met very few people my age or younger who have seen Citizen Kane, which is surprising that a film many call the greatest ever does not spark more curiosity.

Doubt I would have seen it if they hadn't made us watch it in school...though I generally am interested in classic films...
I find it surprising (and not surprising) that many people have never really watched a great Cary Grant movie.
