Any actors/actresses who you normally don't like, but surprised you by a decent or even outstanding performance in a little-known film?

-David Arquette as an Auschwitz inmate and crematorium worker in The Grey Zone

-Colin Farrell as a Russian professional thief in a Siberian Gulag in The Way Back

-Cameron Diaz as a mousy wife turned lesbian in Being John Malkovich

I never liked David Hasselhoff as an actor but he did look the part of Nick Fury in some cable movie not too long ago. Samuel L Jackson played the part and was the exact opposite. Great actor completely miscast for the role.
I normally don't like Tom Cruise but he was great in Interview With a Vampire. Robin Williams is about as funny as a baboon on crack but he was superb in that movie with Al Pacino in Northern Lights. He can reach deep into himself and play some very convincing disturbing characters.

Keanu Reeves in I Love You to Death, where he plays a brain-baked junkie.

Colin Farrell in The Way Back is a good call, although he was also quite good in In Bruges, so maybe he's just had bad roles previously.

I think the perfect example would be Mira Sorvino in Mighty Aprhodite, when it still seemed like she was only acting the part of a well-intentioned airhead.

Colin Farrell is a decent actor who has made some very poor career choices.

Christian Slater was a decent lead in True Romance, which really shined with a great supporting cast and a topsy-turvy script by Tarantino.

Jim Carrey in The Truman Show. It's the only thing he's done that I can stomach.

I don't like any of those "comedic" actors that star in moronic, drunken, frat-guy, toilet humor and sex joke films that contribute to the dumbing down of America.

Jim Carrey may be moronic, but there are others that fit as better examples of drunken frat guy toilet humour and sex jokes comedians.

Yeah, well, it isn't much of a stretch for Keanu to play the role of someone who is "brain-baked" is it? LOL.

My pick for the original question is Julia Roberts as the much-put-upon sister/personal assistant Kiki, who's sister was a spoiled diva actress played by Catherine Zeta-Jones in the movie American Sweethearts. I never like her before seeing that flick. But, I dunno, she was such a sympathetic, likealbe character in that movie that it changed the way I viewed her.
