Primarily a creation of cinematic journeyman Ivan Dixon -- the culture is African-American, the backdrop is the migration from the agrarian South to the industrial North, the soundtrack involves a fair number of Motown singles.

But the story is for everyman/woman -- one of the most under-appreciated films I've ever seen.
