Suppose the Warden allowed Tommy to tell the DA what his old cellmate (Elmo?) had said about killing Andy's wife. Do you think Andy could have gotten a new trial and acquittal?

I think he'd have had a hard time. It would have looked suspicious that some guy andy helped out suddenly says he knows the real killer. Then, they'd have to be able to find Elmo, if he is even still alive.

But let's suppose they found Elmo. He could just say, "Yeah, I worked there when Mrs.Dufresne was killed. I told the kid about it happening, it was a really big story and it was all anybody talked about for weeks." If I worked at a country club and a member killed his wife and the golf pro, it would stick in my mind and it would be something I might talk about later in life.

But he had no motive for the crime. There would be no witnesses and no forensic evidence or DNA (didn't exist at the time) to connect him to the murders.

Andy had motive, owned a gun similiar to the murder weapon which he says he threw in the river but was never found, and was at the murder scene.

A good lawyer and the right jury might get him off, but it would be 50/50 at best. Better stick with his rock hammer.

There's no way Andy could ever go back to his old life after escaping from prison. Escaping from prison is still technically illegal. But hey, it's a movie!
