Dark Knight Rises will not pass that.....no way.
Well, if you are talking about strictly US domestic gross, the Avengers pulled in $200.3M in it's opening weekend. The $648M figure is for it's worldwide gross, and that was for a week and a half.

I did see the Avengers this weekend and I think it will gross more than Dark Knight Rises. I think the Avengers will appeal to a broader audience. Really looking forward to Prometheus as well.

The key to big box office TOTALS is REPEAT viewings, plain and simple. Titanic made $600 million domestically because a fair number of people were seeing it 2-4 times and that made up for the lower price of tickets in 1997-1998 which stood at around $5.25 if I'm not mistaken.

Although "The Avengers" has obliterated the opening weekend record previously held by "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 2" with a take of $207 million in it's opening weekend DOMESTICALLY, I still think it will fall short in total of what "The Dark Knight Rises" will eventally take in, which I'm predicting will be in the neighborhood of $580 million.

"The Avengers" will have another phenomenal 2 weeks of box office and then I think there will be those who see it again but not many. My prediction for it's total will be $510 million which is still less than "The Dark Knight" in 2008 with $533 million. "The Dark Knight Rises" will see repeat viewings by MORE people. Count on it.

THE AVENGERS was released internationally only 3 weeks ago. It has already surpassed THE DARK KNIGHT. See: MARVEL'S THE AVENGERS Crosses $1 Billion Worldwide; Tops THE DARK KNIGHT

I think THE DARK KNIGHT RISES will do really well this summer. It'll be a top grossing film. But I don't think it will surpass THE AVENGERS. TDKR will be the #2 movie of the summer.

The Avengers all the way!! I have never loved a movie so much that I have seen it 3 times in the theater already!! The movie company made a super smart move releasing it before the slew of movies being released in the summer. After memorial day, it will be action movie after action movie being released. The Dark Knight Rises will have competition from other movies being released around the same time. Also, as much as I loved The Dark Knight and think that The Dark Knight Rises will be great as well... The Avengers set a pretty high bar for the caliber of summer hits that are to follow.

What competition?

HAHA. Step Up!?! That's funny. I think even if The Dark Knight bombs, it will still make more money than that movie!! I've never even heard of Ted!

What I meant by my statement was that it will be coming out towards the end of the summer movies. I think there is more advantage if it comes out before and avoids all the competition of the other movies that have already been released. There are generally more movies released during the summer, and so there will be more competition for screens as well.

You didn't name the one movie coming out that month that has any chance of making competition for The Dark Knight Rises - The Amazing Spiderman which also comes out in July! I am so looking forward to that! Hated Kristen Dunst in the other Spiderman movies- Emma Stone, love her!

Regardless, all the summer action movies will be getting my business this summer, lol.

Right, but Spider-man is this year's big 4th of July movie. TDK will come out about 3 weeks after, so that should be enough time. I would say that TDKR would END the movie season, but that title will go to The Expendables 2.

Personally, I think they'll be about the same...

But to quote Joss Whedon on the matter:

Quote:
THIS IS NOT A ZERO SUM GAME. Our successes, whoever has the mostest, are a boon to each other. We're in the business of proving that superhero movies aren't just eye-candy (they're eye-TRUFFLES!). People seem intent on setting us against each other, and though I'm proud to be Woody Strode to Nolan's Kirk Douglas, I think they're missing the point. Whatever TDKR does on its first weekend, the only stat that matters to me is the ticket I'M definitely buying. Nolan and Raimi INVENTED the true superhero flick, yo. (Special mention to Jon Favreau and James Gunn.) Happy to be in the mix.
So. Yeah.

I saw Avengers, I'll be seeing The Dark Knight Rises. Both in a true IMAX theater.

What Mr. Whedon said.

Saw "The Avengers" and will see "The Dark Knight Rises" as well. Probably also go see "The Amazing Spiderman" too for good measure.
