I think they had a decent plot for a prequel but as usual Hollywood F'ed it up to try to make it more watchable. These were all norwegians so right there they lost me when they added americans into the mix. I am curious to know about the ending, though. One norwegian pilot and another norwegian go after the Dog thing. Were these the two major characters in the movie?
If they want to do a "Thing" style movie, they could adapt " At The Mountains of Madness" by HP Lovecraft. You have the antartic expedition wiped out by unfrozen aliens and then the lost aeons old civilization ruins discovered with horrors beyond imagining.

They're not the main characters of any of the movies. They are the ones right at the beginning of the 1982 movie. It opens with the dog running thro the snow and being chased by two guys in a helicopter. The dog runs into the camp where Kurt Russell et al are living. It doesn't end well
The film ties in very well with the 1982 version. Even small details were kept as is evidenced when Kurt Russell and the doctor visit the burned out camp.(An axe left in the door, layout of the interior etc) The director basically reverse engineered the 1982 version. It was clear because I watched this version, And then watched the 1982 version again and it was a very smooth tie in. There was one plot hole involving The female scientist however in the end of this one.
Also shown was the interior of the spacecraft which was designed very well. Had a cold, creepy alien look to it. As far as the "Thing", There was only a very brief view of it before it started absorbing the crew at the base. Looked very Lovecraft as many reviewers said. It was sure not happy after being frozen for thousands of years and then poked with a drill.
I have honestly never seen the original. I saw this one last night. I liked it alot. "The Thing" in the movie was awesome. I dont know what it looked like in the original but it had people on it, and they were deformed and screaming. It was pretty cool
