Did anyone else heartily dislike Glinda the so-called "good witch"??

DH turned on the movie tonight, and we got in a discussion about her.

Ever since I was a kid I despised her. She KNEW how to get Dorothy home, but she had that sickly-sweet arrogant little smile the whole freaking time - "You had to learn it for yourself!" Oh, bite me - she could have sent Dorothy home in a second. She was MEAN - that self-serving nose-curling passive-aggressive sort of mean that made me want to be a BAD witch and slap that supercilious smile right off that overly-made-up face.

Anyone else?

Yeah, I always found her annoying, too. And you're right, she could have gotten Dorothy home in a snap, but then we'd never have met the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion.

I know this is sacrilegious, but I really am not a fan of that movie. Even as a kid I found it kind of stupid.

Agreed, she is evil.

It annoys me no end that the really evil person in a kids movie is painted as 'good' Disgusting.

FABULOUS!

One of the establishing shots in the movie looked like the witch got caught in a crush at Filene's Basement.

Plot lines are almost always about "the journey" of the protagonist. Imagine Lawrence of Arabia saying "Well, we need to get to Aqueba, I think I'll take the next airplane" rather than crossing the desert.

Good witch / bad witch is just a polarization of extremes for young minds that can't grasp larger concepts. It could make for an interesting remake though, with Glenda being shown with a cigarette hanging outta her mouth and going "Yeah, whaddya want, kid? I'm busy here."

She was a fake. There are a lot of women who are like that.

If she had sent Dorothy right home, there wouldn't have been much of a story line, would there have been?
