Buddy Ebsen was a character actor/dancer in the movies in the 1930's. He was in the Shirley Temple movie "Captain January", and was originally cast as the "Tin Man" in "The Wizard of Oz". He had to give up the role because the silver makeup made him deathly ill.

He became really famous years later as "Jed Clampett" on "The Beverly Hillbillies".

What about Paul Newman and his line of hippy, tree hugging food products? Eh, I guess he is still known as an actor.

Orson Welles: For most of my life I thought of him as "that fat guy with the beard who is always a guest on talk shows like Mike Douglas, Merv Griffin, or the Tonight Show." I didn't even know he had an acting/directing career until I was in my 20s and got into some old classic movies.

Or for hawking frozen peas

Same here--I only knew him as the fat guy with the beard, too, until we learned about The War of the Worlds radio broadcast in school.

I'd have to nominate Jon Voight; from 1969's 'Midnight Cowboy' to 1995's 'Heat' to 'John Grisham's The Rainmaker' in 1997, he certainly enjoyed a wonderful career renaissance.

And don't forget "Holes" in 2003!
