Wow, 23 posts and no one mentioned Rec and Rec 2?!?
Two of the greatest zombie movies ever made. Part 3 is not nearly as good but still enjoyable.
A few more honorable mentions:
Tom Savini's 1990 Night of the Living Dead remake (I might even like this more than the original)
Peter Jackson's Braindead (aka Dead Alive -- more humorous)
Dead Set (zombies invade Big Brother - not as ridiculous as it sounds)
Fulci's "The Beyond"
Second tier honorable mentions:
The Dead (zombies in Africa)
Juan of the Dead (zomcom)
Pontypool (psychological zombies? the premise is so unbelievably outside the box, but its earnestness keeps it from drifting into parody)
Many +1s to the great suggestions listed by others
My faves are Dawn of the Dead(original) and Zombieland. Too many Zombie films out there too watch em all, prior to RE and 28 days later, wasn't there none besides Romero's work. Now we have video games(that game probably started the Zombie explosion to begin with), too many movies, heck even a TV series. Creative minds and hollywood need to come up with a new monster instead of rehashing the same stuff.
You have to stay strong and work your way through the first half hour because it is very campy and bad but if you can you'll be rewarded with one of the weirdest and compelling zombie movies I have ever seen. Then it gets REALLY weird when the aliens show up.
I am not sure if it can be called a zombie movie but 2006 flick Mulberry Street was pretty good.
If you haven't seen it, I recommend it!
