Most of the horror movies that I've seen from the past decade have truly blown. In most cases, I can't seem find anything frightening about an "eerie little kid", but it seems like more often than not, they're the focal point of a lot of new horror titles. Take the remake of the Amityville Horror. In the original screen adaptation, Jody was a supernatural demonic pig who only appeared twice: The scene with the eyes in the window, and toward the end where George looks up from the yard and sees it in the attic windows. That was some scary ****.
In the remake however, Jody was a ****ing ghost of a little girl. What's scarier? A demonic, unexplainable supernatural pig....or a goddamn little kid? I paid eight bucks to see that piece of **** remake in the theater, and I was so disgusted when I saw how badly they butchered the original story that I didn't feel guilty for smuggling outside snacks and beverages into the theater.

Most are not very good indeed. Substituting violence for suspense and scares, Or having characters that the audience does not care about, Who get themselves into ridiculous situations. But what irks me most is the overuse of CGI...The villain should never be complete CGI only. There is no substitute for animatronics/latex and related. CGI is OK to enhance this, But not as complete effect.
To me, Horror is being in a helpless situation, Facing the unknown..And creatures and creepy things are scarier when they are shown less a lot of times. Like being in the dark, Knowing someone(or something) is in the house
and is slowly taunting you, And you are trapped like a rat in a maze. Stuff like that. The sinking feeling of dread...

Yeah I'll agree, some them try to be too scary, but I think Silent Hill is a good one!

Good example! Nightmarish horrors and deep mystery. A bit Lovecraftian..I remember playing the original game, And that was creepy. This was on the Playstation original I think.
I agree OP, they do suck (most of them anyways). Here are some ones I liked though: someone mentioned Silent Hill, also Paranormal Activity, Hostel, and I really liked the remake of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre." But they need to stop doing these remakes because they are just terrible. For example "Last House on the Left." They really f*ked that one up .I heard they are trying to redo the Exorcist and Rosemary's Baby. No, just no.
I heard they were gonna redo Stephen King's IT. That will most definitely suck if they don't have Tim Curry play the clown. But to we-write Jody from Amityville as a stupid little kid with some spooky makeup vs. that scary as hell supernatural pig? WTF? I wanted to see the PIG! The pig was scary as **** in both the book and the original film! Little kids are not scary!
Jody the pig in the book and the movie was so scary to me that to this day I am afraid of pigs. I hate those fat suckers and never feel even an ounce of guilt when I eat one lol.

I don't understand the fasciation with IT. I tried watching the miniseries and found it alternately boring or silly. I tried reading the book and just found it boring. I finally gave up around page 400.
Paranormal Activity and Insidious did not have any gore in them, but both were pretty scary. "Drag me to hell" was pretty scary also, although a bit gory and disgusting (and funny) at times. Not all new movies are bad, that is such a cliched statement..arrgh!!
