I own a decent home theater system so I wait for DVD 99% of the time. Plus, there are so many crappy movies out there, I will not waste more than a buck or two for these movies. I'm not willing to shell out my hard earn money unless it's huge/epic type movies like The Hobbit, LOTR, etc. I did gave in and went to the theater for Man of Steel, was a buy one get one free ticket.
i pick and choose which movie i will see on the big screen. i get discount tickets that don't expire from costco or on base and save some bucks. most times i choose wisely. sometimes it's not up to par and i should have waited on the dvd. any movies from directors i closely follow i automatically seek out their new releases at the theater; p.t. anderson, wes anderson, jeff nichols, and a few others.
Generally speaking I need an intelligent plot and solid acting to go along with action that makes a big screen necessary. I spent the $13 per ticket for IMAX 3D for Gravity and it was well worth it. That was only the 2nd movie I went to this year (the other was 42, which I ultimately could've/should've waited for cable release).
24 of those grossed more than $100 million.
51 grossed more than $50 million.
117 grossed more than $1 million
210 had any box office at all.
Meaning more than 9800 were straight to DVD (or worse).
I think every movie is better in the movie theater. (unless I suppose if the other audience members ruin the experience for you)
I still love going to the movie theater. There are fewer distraction
This is huge for me. People talking, cellphones going off, babies/kids crying, can't pause if I need the restroom, food and drinks cost an arm and a leg. Just not worth it. Too much distractions.
Home theater systems and projectors are very affordable that an average person can own a home theater system in their homes now. The only downfall is the WAIT. Other than that, I have my own food, I set the sound/volume as loud or quiet as I like, I can watch it on a screen as big as I want.
Watching horror, action and fighting movies on theater is really amazing and worth remembering but a family movie is more entertaining when you watch at home.
I loathe movie theaters. Loathe them. It never fails that an obnoxious person will sit either in front, next to or behind me. There is always a jerk in the crowd if not more than one jerk. Nope, I quit going to the theaters back in 2006, Brokeback Mountain was my last experience. That did it for me. I simply wait for dvd now.
