I agree with you about the Blind Side and films like that, but that guy in Fargo was inone scene and there wasn't any emphasis on him being Asian. He was just another sad guy with a Minnesota accent who happened to be played by a Chinese actor. I mean William H. Macy's character is equally desperate and meek...
Also, one thing I've learned from cop shows and movies is that all police commisioners are tough-as-nails black people who've got the mayor on their ass...
Yeah and what about Cheech and Chong? You had a Mexican-American from East LA and a Chinese-Canadian working as a fairly equal team to score dope.
You're right, he comes in once scene to dine with McDormand. But he called her late at night, gets hyper on the phone, is all jumpy, finally collapses and admits he is lonely.... very unfair to Chinese/Japanese people.
There's another movie where I loved the portrayal of Koreans/Japanese. It's called "Too Big to Fail". Dick Fuld tries to rescue Lehmann with unprofessional tactics and the composed Korean/Japanese businessman expresses his dissatisfaction. Excellently choreographed scene.
If they are going to do stereotypes, they need to do it like Rodriguez did in Machete. The movie is a work of art. I have seen it at least 10 times and laughed my rear off over and over. It's sitting in my DVR and see my favourite parts often
If you want "real life" and "down-to-earth" everyday looking people, you can always watch a Ken Burns' documentary.
Exactly...
Movies are not meant to be about boring, mundane "real life."
Movies are our mental vacation... if they don't succeed in that, they don't sell.
We NEED inspiration.
It doesn't matter if it's about Asians, African Americans, Irish or American Mixes...
What matters is if it's a story that inspires the audience with people who met and overcame obstacles with flying colors!
Then ones like the blind side, Invictus blah blah blah..... what is it with these film makers that they try to extoll a particular racial group. Are they trying to make them feel better?? Something of a tolerant saint syndrome.
I now need a movie about Chinese laundry folks from the 1890s. I'd cast Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu and that scott pilgrim Asian chick, so she can have a pull with the Asian youth
How is it pandering when the Tuskegee Airmen were real and their feats chronicled in non-fictional books and even a recent documentary on the History Channel. You want pandering, pick almost any movie with a white cast and and a token Negro. Hollywood panders all right, to people that look like them.
I DO think there is a certain amount of pandering in the movie but not the angle that some of you are coming from. I've heard over and over again that the reason there aren't more black films is because films with a majority black cast don't do well in the theaters because black people don't go to the movies.
So here you go black people! George Lucas wants you to have a movie! Now go see it and prove Hollywood wrong!
That was my take on an article I read, since Lucas himself didn't write the article I'm not saying it's his angle but it was def implied by the media.
Incidently, Stallone mentioned how difficult it was for him to secure funding to make The Expendables and no one raised a hue and cry over that. Lucas is obviously trying to generate sympathy among prospective viewers. But wild comments regarding implied racism are a big turnoff.(Same reason I did not see Miracle at St. Ana) As is the video game quality CGI seen in the trailers.(Same reason I did not see Flyboys) Film has first rate cast though. The approval of the Red Tails association is a big positive. The hammerhead turn and strafing scene do not bode well though as it appears to be some superhuman type of events replaced the actual, and still impressive, actions. As has been pointed out in the aircraft forums a P-51(in another unit) did achieve a kill via a hammerhead turn but not in the manner depicted which is aerodynamically impossible. Reminds me of Pearl Harbor with the aircraft dogfighting at altitudes of 50feet which is also impossible.
The ship actually sunk in the strafing was a tiny 800ton ex-WWI TB not a 15,000ton pre-dreadnought as seen in the scene.(A number of Japanese escort vessels of similar tonnage to the TB were also sunk in this manner) So we already have a number of falsehoods in what is supposed to be an impeccably researched film. Which still may not be a deal breaker as Patton had a number of inaccuricies from equipment used(1960s tanks) to Patton's voice(Patton had a high pitched voice entirely different from GCS) but is still an outstanding film
Either it is a popcorn flick to recreate away two hours or a thoughtful drama. I doubt it will be an awful bomb ala Miracle at St. Ana with cast.
Just like there are plenty of movies about lawyers and bank robberies but they keep making them..........
Yep. They can make as many movies as they like about whatever topic, I've seen some great stuff on the History Channel and Military Channel Re: Tuskeegee Airmen and they are a truly inspiring group.
I was merely pointing out that the story has been made into movie before but here we are in 2012 and Lucas had to fight *racism* to get it made.
Race-baiting to sell tickets.....maybe if he could still make good movies he wouldn't have to stoop so low.
You're right, he comes in once scene to dine with McDormand. But he called her late at night, gets hyper on the phone, is all jumpy, finally collapses and admits he is lonely.... very unfair to Chinese/Japanese people.
Would you rather have him portrayed as the weasely conniving husband? The greedy piggish father? Or maybe the kidnapper with below average IQ and a woodchipper fetish?
The only decent substantial character in Fargo is the female cop.
