You cannot see the forest for the trees: most of the white people in the movie are following foolish flights of fancy that get them into trouble. Mammy, however is the only one who is NOT a fool.

Oh fiddle dee dee.
It would have been fun if Big George was a Transformer, too. Or if they all did the "Time Warp" at the barbecue and Twelve Oaks blasted off for Transexual Transylvania.
You don't like the movie. We get that. Do you have something else on the menu?

Mammy may be the biggest fool in cinematographic history. She devoted her life to taking care of a spoiled brat when she could have poisoned her a long time ago and no one would have known about it.
I actually agree with the earlier commenter about how much Mammy loved Miss Scarlett and how she never could have hurt her. That's why Mammy would have to be off-ed during the slave rebellion. If they let Mammy in on the plan, she would have run back and told Massa.
"After all Massa done did for you. Bought y'all clothes. Took you from Africa. Gave you jobs. And this is how you repay him!?!? Lawd!!!"

This is probably the most common sense post to this thread.
To those who don't like the movie, who cares?

I forced myself to watch it several times and failed at it. To sit through the whole movie must be more painful than a workout Not sure why it's so popular with the oldies

First, the writer saying he's "not a fan of" GWTW isn't the same thing as your saying it's the "worst movie ever."
Second, although I just glanced at the article - I'll have to read it more closely when I have time - the writers' main objection appears to really be to the book, not the way the the movie was made.
Third, while I don't believe that GWTW is the greatest movie made as some people do, not even one of the ten greatest, not even one of the ten greatest American - only someone who had hardly seen any movies at all could ever think of terming it "worst movie ever."
It doesn't hold up perfectly, but it does a superlative job of struggling with a sprawling story, has some good performances, has quite a lot of humor that holds up excellently, is overall very enjoyable for at least 95% of the public, and was pretty much unlike any movie that had been made.

He considered hiring D.W. Griffith (Birth of a Nation) to assist with the film.

The three principal black characters, Mammy, Prissy and Pork, don't even have real names and were portrayed as simple-minded, complacent, even happy in their enslaved existence, and filled with love for their oppressor. That the film's producers may have really felt this was true is evident in their commitment to this portrayal even in the face of all the arguments brought by the NAACP, Urban League, the black press and letter writing protestors. It was further evidenced at the film's opening in Atlanta, where McDaniel was not allowed to attend and at the Academy Awards where McDaniel was not allowed to accept her Oscar on stage. These were living examples of how the ideals of the old South continued to be romanticized by Hollywood.

I'm glad that 95 percent of the American viewing public still gets to enjoy this racist garbage on TV today.

While I don't think it's the worst movie ever, I do feel it is one of the more over-rated movies. However, I do have to admit that Scarlett O'Hara is one of my favorite fictional psychopaths.
There were a lot of great movies in 1939:

The fact that Gone With the Wind beat-out The Wizard of Oz and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington for best movie that year is ridiculous.
