I wish a "Roots" style mini-series could be made detailing what happened to the Acadians (now known as Cajuns) from them leaving France for what is now Nova Scotia, the abuse they suffered at the hands of the English, their exile from their homes, the deaths aboard the ships, their arrival in New Orleans, the hardship they endured from their slave owning countrymen, and their trip west where they settled. They could also include the torment they endured at the hands of union troops hell bent on wiping out the French language, the northern teachers brought in who beat (sometimes with a bullwhip) students for speaking French), and the call to service of their country when war sent US troops to France and suddenly our nation wanted this French language they tried so hard to eliminate. Many generations lost the language.

One of the few movies I ever watched about Cajun's was "Southern Comfort" It was about a Natonal Guard Unit on their annual weekend training gig who accidently shot a cajun and then had to fight for their lives to escape. Only problem was they only had a couple live rounds of ammo and the rest blanks. Powers Booth was excellent in the lead role.

And I would watch a mini series about what you decribed, too.

Loved Southern Comfort ... it was kind of like Deliverance in some ways.
