I enjoyed this movie and the music was excellent. Although not a fan of Penn, he did a great job with this film.

Available on DVD
For those, like myself, who missed it or who just want a copy, "Into the Wild" is **now available on DVD**. I also missed it in a theatre for it's short-lived screen appearance. Looking forward to getting a copy. Began reading the book over the winter - a chapter here and there. Having lived in AK for about a year and having visited at least one of the areas where the movie had been filmed (I think prior to it being filmed), I'm looking forward to seeing it on screen.
And yes - some of us just have an adventurous Spirit about us. My folks always told us, esp. Mom, "Travel while you can...!" My folks completed a world tour with a year's stop in AFR in their first few years of marriage (with a couple of children, in tow). Thing is - they never told us to stop. Once I started adventuring on my own... I've continued. There's just something about it that continues to draw you - seeing and meeting new ppl and things, changing, growing, adapting your personnae to include what you've found to become someone you never had imagined you might have been or ever dreamed.
Life is amazing.

Yes, perhaps something beckoned and it all was inevitable.
I don't know for sure. Creme, it's not too late for you to make a life-changing journey. You could still do it, though maybe you don't want to live in a deserted bus in the Alaskan wildnerness.

Yes--but be aware, I was pretty disappointed that there were no special features whatsoever.
::waggles finger disapprovingly at Mr. Penn::

I agree, JustT& Me--travel while you can. That's great about your parents.
Life is amazing and has much to offer, and changing and adapting can be a real challenge, but worthwhile.
Maybe that's why one of my kids is across the Atlantic from me right now.

Haven't lived in a bus, but at one time in my life, stored all my furniture, and stuff...and that is all it is, just stuff, and lived in a camp ground for a year....and out of a van...it was awesome....
now, at this stage in my life, would rather just mellow and read stories about all those others who have lived that dream.
People in America, do not know how to improvise, we need our stuff, which is nice, but, not the same as living an adventure...a dream....free from all of societies demands.
Hugs and thanks

Finally
Fiannly, I got to watch this incredible story today...
Sean Penn, this was all inspiring, gripping, felt like Penn was inhabiting my being...unleashing the kid in me again....photographty spoke faux intellect metaphorically...the impact of nature and wildlife were ladders of imagry....Bravo...best film since I AM SAM....will be purchasing this for my library...for certain...
Thank you Sean Penn, for the memories....the photogentic genus and executing not only a real story, but a believable diary of someone's legacy.
Incredible movie!!!!

Saw it last nite. Thought it very good. Sean Penn is as intense a director as he is an actor.

My husband and I saw this movie a couple weeks ago. While the story itself is compelling, I thought the writing was pretty mediocre at best. Some of the lines made me cringe a little (like the scene when he was eating the apple and mugging the camera). The droning narration of the sister got old after a bit. And the sweeping shots of nature were good and well executed, but then I was like, "okay, I get it, he's going into the wild, I GET IT." But, they were beautiful.
I was surprised because Penn is an excellent actor. But this movie came off as a bit indulgent and too worshipful of a man who struggled like many young people do in their early 20's with who they are, etc., but made some mistakes that lead him down a deadly path while trying to find himself. So just speaking on the move itself, I felt overall it was poorly made, IMO.

well you have a right to your opinion, for certain, and we all can't like the same things....but here is my take....
I could relate because I was the same as him...always lurred by nature, the sea and oceans of the world...as I explained before, it's a yearning that can't be ignored...sort of like a knot in your stomach of wanting to live it, but all your instincts of conditioning by your parents tell you it's wrong, and sometimes holds you back...I've made some bad decissions in my life, due to my parents advice, on how I should proceed in life...they were wrong for me...all I wanted to do was travel, meet people, talk to them, find out what made them think and believe the way they do....but, most of all, I hated how society deems you different, if you don't think and believe like they do...or get married and have children...so I could probably relate more.
I am also not an advocate of material things...I give stuff away constantly and my family cannot understand it. To them, there is always a price tag on things/stuff...it's just stuff, and if someone else will enjoy it....if it makes them happy, then, why not give it to them? I don't have collections or hold onto things with sentimental value...it's simply stuff.
Also, the lure of nature that was in me was like his as well, so, I can understand totally, that he wasn't trying to find himself, it was simply who, he wanted to be, and what he wanted to do.
If I died tomorrow...and had the experiences he had, I'd be a happy person. I realize, when your young like that you believe time stands still and your invincible...but...as you grow older you become more conditioned to fears that society instills.
I can also relate to him taking off the moment someone thought they could tell him how to live his life and what he was supposed to be....not fair...it has been done to me all my life and I'm at the point in my life that I'm down right sick of it. I know family means well...but if you don't do what they advise, they become annoyed...and it's not fair...and that is what I saw in him.
I thought it was a well done movie...and I thought Penn did a marvelous job. I don't know if I posted this before, but...I saw Penn and the actor that played Christopher being interviewed. Penn asked him while they were shooting if he ever did any white water rafting...the kid said no...but he did it...so that was really him going down the rapids.
I believe we are connected to all things...and I believe when we become overwhelmed by society's ideas of how we should think and feel, it destroys our balance, adds stress and hinders the well fair of our bodies, our health in general. It takes it's toll. We forget that, we don't own our children, and we've got to allow them their lives....and not expect them to live out our dreams that we didn't accomplish.
Anyway, I could go on and on, but hope you don't take offense, I simply saw much more in the movie then meets the eye. that is why I enjoyed it so much. And I didn't mind his sister...I liked her and admired her, as she was the only one who seemed to understand him.
Best regards and thanks for your post
Creme
