Looking forward to getting a copy. Began reading the book over the winter - a chapter here and there. Having lived in AK for about a year and having visited at least one of the areas where the movie had been filmed (I think prior to it being filmed), I'm looking forward to seeing it on screen.

And yes - some of us just have an adventurous Spirit about us. My folks always told us, esp. Mom, "Travel while you can...!" My folks completed a world tour with a year's stop in AFR in their first few years of marriage (with a couple of children, in tow). Thing is - they never told us to stop. Once I started adventuring on my own... I've continued. There's just something about it that continues to draw you - seeing and meeting new ppl and things, changing, growing, adapting your personnae to include what you've found to become someone you never had imagined you might have been or ever dreamed.

Life is amazing.
Just goes to prove, we are duplicates of our parents thoughts, dreams and feelings, the way we act, express, our emotions.....they teach us fears....imprint our lives forever, unless we can break away from that conditioning, and realize, we are our own souls...if only more parents would express the importance of being oneself....to be as your parents were....we're supposed to teach our kids to acheive and do better then we did....but we're also suppose to teach them to allow....allowance is a great big expression of love and the greatest gift of love you can give others...is to let them go....push them forward and onward...and not expect them to follow in our foot steps but to achieve their persona...develop there own special talents....to problem solve, to think and believe there are no limits....the boundaries and limits we place upon ourselves, are fears instilled within us from the time we were born.

I'm so glad, you understand....and understand this young man's plight...and I'm thankful, no one stopped him...b/c in the short time he lived, he achieved more of his own dreams, experiences, then most humans do. And that is what people, do not understand....he acheived by not being stagnated, by not listening to his parents...

my son, may to some day die before me, God forbid, b/c his career is a dangerous one, but, he did what he wanted to do....wrong or right...it is his life, not mine...and in being over protective with our children, we stagnate them and make them like we are....those parents who encourage their children to strive for their own dreams are truly wise.

Many hugs, Creme

Keep in mind--it's only Hollywood. Hollywood really isn't very good at depicting any sort of truth about Alaska.

He did great right up until he moved to Alaska. Then he got in way over his head. It cost him his life. Let that be a lesson to the dreamers. A little research and planning and this story may have had a different ending. So I like to think he gave his life for a worthwhile cause. To show the newcomers that the reality of living in the bush...is no picnic or cakewalk. Lack of food, cold weather, illness, or even a good cut...can cost you your life when you don't have a store or a doctor right down the street.

I was in the area when Sean Penn and his crew came up to do some filming. I can't say that I met him though I really did; I just didn't know who he was. He came into where I worked for a little while. I don't follow popular culture. I didn't see him again after someone told me who he was, but from what I'm told by others in the area, he didn't act all uppity like so many other hollywood types that come up do.

Chris McCandless was an idiot, and he died because of it. There's nothing romantic about starving to death in the wilderness because you don't have the cajones to face reality.

From reading the book I think he had some mental/psychological problem that looks to others as "freedom" and "free-thinking" but was really an undiagnosed "tic", some kind of "tourettes syndrome" where he has to keep moving (instead of cursing). I do feel terribly sorry for him. I think he needed help and never got it.

This is exactly the kind of thinking that saddens me about the world.

Everyone seems to think that if someone wants to break the norm and live without boundries that they have psychological problems.

I think if anyone has psychological problems it is us who choose to sit in an office day in and day out and waste our lives away choosing not to go out and do the things we truly desire to do. Chris seemed to be more sane than 99% of the world. He lived life exactly how he wanted to.

Did you read the book or are you just going by the movie? I'm only talking about this particular kid and from reading the book. My context is NOT everyone who wants to live without borders.

I enjoyed your post Recycled and agree with you on the feeling of immortality and immunity to danger when young and in your twenties.

It bothered me also the hurt and anquish he brought to his family, but sometimes such thoughts may not resonate as they do when we get older.

I enjoyed the movie, loved the soundtrack and was saddened with his not making it, especially when it seemed he may have changed his mind on what was important to him.
