I was also thinking to go and see it. The reviews are nearly unanimously positive, praising the acting, directing, scenario, setting, etc. Ever since I've seen and enjoyed Ben Affleck's previous movies, he won me over: the guy has serious potential as a director .
Just came back. Only old farts like DH and me in the theater and I think if you lived through that horrible time you would appreciate it more. A great movie where even though you know how it ends. you still are on the edge of your seat. I recommend it to anyone with a sense of history or who likes a suspenseful story.
My husband and I really enjoyed it. The fashion and 70s/80s "artifacts" were so realistic. I admit to not having remembered much of the details of these historic events (I was in middle school), so it was very suspenseful. I really liked the direction.
Oh - and don't dart right out as soon as the movie ends. Along with the credits are some fascinating original photographs of the embassy and the people involved in the film. A don't miss if you can make the knuckleheads in front of you sit down!
It was so good I actually thought those were original news footage shots of the riots but researched it some last night and found out they hired thousands of extras to play those mob scenes. Ben says so many kids were in school and adults working that he was afraid it would look like a geriatric riot! but I don't remember too many old folks. It was shot in Istanbul and looked very realistic. I can't imagine directing and staring in a movie at the same time but he did a great job.
Also our movie time was 4:15 but there were so many actual commercials and then new movie previews that the feature didn't start until almost 4:45.
We always stay till they turn the light on and look at the credits. Mostly I like to see who musical artists were and location credits but in this one the follow up actual photos are very important.
I remember some of those 69 hostages did not do so well after they got home. The fake executions really did a number on the mental health of the hostages. Wonder if anybody has done any follow up on them today.
Very good thriller/on the edge of your seat movie! Perhaps because I didn't know much about that history so I wasn't spoiled of the ending. I thought Ben Affleck did a great job of letting the story to drive the entire movie. The pacing was just right too. Highly recommend it.
If this is not the movie of the year, there is something wrong with Hollywood.
We saw the movie at 9:50 PM and there were tons of different ages. I was in my 20's and worked 3 jobs plus went to school when it happened- I had forgotten so much, especially the 6.
Ben Affleck did a marvelous job directing and acting. The scenes were realistic and most were on the edge of their seats.
At the theatre we go to, it was sold out - every show - showing in 3 or 4 theatres.
I couldn't even sleep last night just reliving the scenes.
Just saw it. I thought it was excellent, but then I'm old enough to remember the events.
Am going to watch this movie Tuesday night. Like Katzpur, I remember those events.
