I am really curious as to what makes someone a "movie buff" or "Film geek". Do you have to watch older movies,go to the movies frequently? What exactly defines them?

Nothing. We all have different experiences with movies. I once took a film class at college from a professor I knew and liked. I failed it. It didn't bother me in the slightest, as he understood the industry differently than I did. If you like particular movies, fantastic. Try to understand WHY you like them, but don't worry about other people and their tastes. It isn't a competition, it is all about you and your experience.

Interesting question. I don't think there's any definition, but to me it implies watching films with progressively more intelligence and discrimination. Ideally, you think about movies, beyond just saying that you liked something or that it had cool special effects. Personally, I go to a lot of movies, love older movies, go to movies that have Q&As, read reviews, own film reference books, etc.

How about you?

A film buff can be someone who watches a lot of movies but I think it is someone who has advanced knowledge of the films he or she has watched and the history of films.

1--A good working knowledge of all the genres of cinema, including foreign film and also those movies made before they were born.
2--The ability to describe the varying styles of different directors. And, for extra Film Geek points, the styles of different cinematographers.
3--Know what a "key grip" and a "gaffer" are.
4--Can recite many of his favorite quotes perfectly and on demand.
5--Know the difference between a "treatment" and a "screenplay."
