That was a little different because it was a book. It also dealt with a subject that has universal appeal ("Where's my man????")

I don't consider that a "black" movie. The series has just had some black actors to draw in that demographic and make it more "hip." Most people don't think of Vin Diesel as being a black man and the only other black people in the series, from my recollection, were Ja Rule, Ludacris, Tyrese and Bow Wow.

Not necessarily. Some movies featuring black actors/actresses just plain suck. Take Catwoman with Halle Berry for example. Aside from seeing Halle prance around in a tight costume, which absolutely no straight men were complaining about, it was just a terrible movie. But white actors make some really bad movies too. Ever see Gigli?

Also, I didn't say that black movies did not do well. Tyler Perry shows that this obviously is not true. I said that black movies are not particularly popular among mainstream audiences. I don't have stats on the number of non-black people that went to the theaters to see "Madea Goes to Jail," but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that number is relatively small. The movie nontheless performed decently at the Box Office because black people turned out to see it.

And to revisit your earlier point, I can't think of a single movie that people called a "flop" based on the race of the lead actor/actress. And that's likely because there aren't that many black actors/actresses that are cast in lead roles in mainstream movies anyway. The ones that flopped were truly flops and I don't think anyone said those movies flopped because the lead actor was black.

Snakes on a Plane was awful. It would have been awful if it were Ryan Reynolds instead of Sam Jackson. Not too many black people will defend Sam on that one.

Catwoman, as mentioned before, was not good. Not good at all. We can't chalk that one up to race.

Virtuosity with Denzel Washington was not very good, imo.

Seven Pounds was not good either. Not sure how well it did. We definitely can't say race was a factor there because Will Smith has shut the box office down many a time.

And how can we not mention Passenger 57? It did reasonably well at the Box Office. And Blade was very good to Wesley even though he failed to turn over a substantial portion of the proceeds to the IRS.

I think "race" is blamed more (even though it is not reality). Just a convenient excuse. The reality is people will turn out for a good movie no matter who is in it.

I am on my phone, please forgive the typos.

I agree with you, but I think that for black actors/directors, there is less margin for error with regards to a flop (affecting one's career) unless one is really well established.

What happened was that the black man is realizing that its time to stop sitting around hypnotized, laughing and watching movies, and are preparing to get our family and economic lives in order.
