I haven't seen it in 15 years or more, but I don't remember finding it funny at all. Just kind of pathetic and obnoxious. Steve Martin is one of those actors that when he is trying to be funny, I can't stand him. But when he's playing it straight, he's absolutely hilarious. Like Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, probably my second favorite John Hughes flick. Speaking of John Hughes flicks ...
Ferris Bueller's Day Off. By far his best work. His best direction. His best story. Every cast member is spot on perfect. The secondary characters are just as endearing as the main characters.
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. Funny but touching. Steve Martin and John Candy were never better. As usual, Edie McClurg steals the scene. One of the best holiday films ever made.
The Breakfast Club. More dramedy than comedy, but still a great movie. At its best when it's not taking itself too seriously.
She's Having A Baby. Probably Hughes's most under-rated movie. Very funny but with a good message. The scene in the bedroom with the in-laws wearing headlamps kills me every time. "Get your butt up higher!" "Dear, I'm sure he knows what he's doing." "If he knew what he was doing, I'd have a grandchild by now!"
Sixteen Candles. Probably Hughes's most over-rated movie. The secondary cast (Anthony Michael Hall, Gedde Wattanabe, the parents) save the movie. But Molly Ringwald's character is probably the most unlikeable heroine in any Hughes movie. The message of this movie is really kind of sick. The main character has a family who loves her (though admittedly they're stressed at the moment), takes care of her, and is obviously well off financially. She has friends and nice clothes. Nothing at all wrong with her life. But she spends the entire freakin' movie whining because she isn't everyone's center of attention and because the cutest boy in school doesn't belong to her. Boo freakin' hoo. The movie might have had a real heart and a real brain if it had shown her there's more to life than being everyone's favorite princess. But no. She's happy at the end because she gets everything she wants. What a horrible message for teenagers. Blech and double blech. But as I said, the secondary cast is hilarious enough to save the show.
