once were warriors (1994). set in new zealand, story follows a maori family and how they deal with modern life with it's poverty and vices. you'll recognize temuera morrison, who plays jake, head of the family who's always getting drunk, from star wars II attack of the clones (jango fett) and star wars III revenge of the sith (commander cody and all of the clones have his face). powerful, depressing, outstanding film with a climax ending.

The Day After (partially filmed in my hometown when I was a kid) is depressing, but more depressing is the British equivalent Threads.

I agree on Requiem For A Dream and The Road.

Jude (mid-1990s film) should probably be on the list too.

A tie between two Lars von Trier films, Dancer in the Dark and Breaking the Waves. Watching either of those films is guaranteed to drain all the color from your soul.

Sling Blade (1996) - IMDb

Sling Blade. Autistic kid, neglected and abused by his family, sees his Mother being "attacked" and kills the rapist, his Mother screams at him, that was her lover, so he whacks her too, for being a ho. He gets put in the mental asylum, gets let out, wanders around...anyway, he is a nice guy, who has a messed up life...all the way around.
