I am an East Indian and I have lived in pretty much every part of the world except your country. The closest I've come is living in Canada(which they say is pretty much the same).
What I find alluring about your country is that each state is unique and could pass off as a separate nation in itself based on geography, lifestyle, culture etc. This I have observed from movies. I am a scriptwriter and I watch 3 to 4 films daily.

I am collecting a data of sorts of movies which are synonymous with a certain state. Shot there, set there whatever. For obvious reasons I am excluding NYC and LA because they constitute 80% of everything Hollywood shoots or sets its films in.

For example the early 90s show Northern Exposure takes me to the state of Alaska. So does the movie 30 days of night(even though its not shot there).

Also, I am a sucker for films in the time frame of 1960-1995. I hardly watch glossy new movies. My favorite era would be 1980-1995.

Florida:
Miami Vice
The Specialist(Stallone)
Midnight in the garden of good and evil(John Cusack)
DEXTER

Midwest(Utah, Colarado, Illionois etc)...reminds me of vast expansive fields, horses, sunny atmosphere
Dances With wolves
A river runs through it
Legends of the fall
Robocop(detroit right?)
American Beauty
Jeremiah Johnson
Silence of the lambs

Chicago I have seen a very small number(early 80s films) but I count it in the same vein as NYC and LA.

Hawaii
Jurassic Park
Lost

Alaska:
Northern Exposure
Into the wild

Get the picture

I'll appreciate it.

Gran Torino is a good one. It was made in 2008. Grosse Pointe Blank is one of my favorites and it came out in the late 90s. Both are set in the Detroit area though Grosse Pointe Blank was filmed mostly in LA.

The Beverly Hills Cop movies are made in the 80s and some parts are set in Detroit, but a majority of the stories take place in LA (as implied by the title). However there's a lot of reference to Detroit throughout both films.

Hi, rishi85.

Alabama:
According to imdb.com, To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) was partially filmed in the town of Monroeville, Alabama. I webpage promoting the town-- Monroeville: The "To Kill a Mockingbird" Experience - Alabama Road Trips - Alabama.Travel -- points out that the courthouse scenes were done in Monroeville.

IMDB includes a "film settings" section for films.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) was also partially filmed in several areas in and near Mobile, Alabama, near the Gulf of Mexico.

Alabama:

The town square scenes of Mississippi Burning (1988) take place in Lafayette, Alabama, according to IMDB.

Mississippi:

Mississippi Masala (1991). Partly filmed in several Mississippi towns.

A search for "movies filmed in (insert name of state)" led me to this page for Alabama: Best Movies Filmed in Alabama - TopTenREVIEWS . Pick a film that meets your criteria, enter the title in the IMDB search, then scroll down to the Details/film settings section of the page. Once there, click the "See more" link.

Pennsylvania: Witness (1985) -- Modern-day Philadelphia and rural Amish farmlands.

Boston, MA: Fever Pitch (2005) -- About a passionate Red Sox fan (very timely, considering their recent World Series victory).
Also, Good Will Hunting (1997) -- "Southies" from S. Boston vs. Harvard students

FYI, Northern Exposure (one of my favorite tv shows) was filmed in the state of Washington, not Alaska.
From IMDb and Wikipedia:
Northern Exposure (TV Series 1990
Although the town of Cicely is widely thought to be patterned after the real town of Talkeetna, Alaska,[12][13] the main street of Cicely and the filming location was that of Roslyn, Washington, located in the Cascade Mountains. "Northern Exposure II" (the main production facility) was located in Redmond, Washington in what is now the headquarters of Genie Industries, behind a business park.

There's a discussion in the Colorado forum about movies and tv shows filmed here:
How many popular movies or TV shows can you name which feature Colorado...

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is set in Savannah, Georgia. (not just correcting you - it's an important distinction)

Prince of Tides - South Carolina

"Andy Griffith Show" and films based on Nicholas Sparks' books - North Carolina

"Designing Women" - Georgia

Forrest Gump - Alabama

"Dallas" - Texas

Alexander Payne is from Omaha, Nebraska; he shoots there a lot and his new film is called Nebraska, and will be out in theaters soon. Friends who grew up in Hawaii have told me his movie "The Descendants" painted one of the most accurate depictions of the state they've seen, and the slack-key guitarist Keola Beamer had never consented to do a soundtrack for a movie about Hawaii until that one.
