On 'Lois and Clark, the New Adventures of Superman', when Clark was experimenting with what kind of costume to wear, he wasn't sure about wearing a cape. But his mother told him a cape would look good when he's flying. So he wore a cape.

And no, wearing a cape doesn't mean you will be able to fly just as it doesn't mean that you would be able to use a sword like Zorro who also wears a cape.

That's a weird explanation. Why would he care what he looks like when he flies. I would think he would want to go unnoticed most of the time.
