Smaller budget, relatively unknown director (at the time); fairly low-key sfx; brilliantly atmospheric, great score; decent acting (especially from little-know, Weaver); really scary and shocking!
"Aliens" - bigger budget, better sfx; slick, rip-roaring action-fest. But for me at least it lacked soul. But then again perhaps its because I don't really like military-type storylines.
Loved Bishop & Newt though. And really got pumped up when Ripley went toe2toe with the Queen by shouting "Get away from her, you bit&h!!"
This is an apple and oranges question. They're both fruit, but they're both very different fruit. If you're going to compare them, you need to keep the differences in mind.
ALIEN is a horror film, and one of the best ever made. It is Ridley Scott's second best movie.
ALIENS is an action/adventure film, and one of the best ever made. It is James Cameron's second best movie.
^^ this. I liked them both , but for different reasons.
