Birdman is the best film of the year in every way. It is truly spectacular. Boyhood and Whiplash are also some of my favorites along with Foxcatcher, The Theory of Everything, Gone Girl, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and to a lesser extent Nightcrawler.
Still excited to see Inherent Vice, The Imitation Game, and American Sniper.
Haven't seen Boyhood, Birdman, or The Imitation Game. I'm hoping at least one of these will redeem 2014, possibly the worst movie year ever. Nothing I've seen rates a mention.
Agree. The Drop was an excellent movie, but unfortunately has been overlooked.
I'd go with Boyhood and Nightcrawler as my top 2.
Remember when 'Goodfellas' received Five BAFTA's (British Academy Film Awards) in 1991 including best picture and best director but was totally overlooked in terms of both the Golden Globes and the Oscars in the US, with 'Dances with Wolves' taking best picture. Whilst Goodfellas only managed to take one Oscar which was for best supporting actor in respect of Joe Pesci - unbelievable to look back on it now.
Quote:
Made on a budget of $25 million, Goodfellas grossed $46.8 million domestically. It received positive reviews from critics. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and won for Pesci in the Best Actor in a Supporting Role category. Scorsese's film won five awards from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, including Best Film, and Best Director. The film was named Best Film of the year by various film critics groups.
Goodfellas is often considered one of the greatest films of all time, both in the crime genre and in general, and was deemed "culturally significant" and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the United States Library of Congress. Scorsese followed up this film with two more films about organized crime
I saw this movie the other night and really enjoyed it. I've read others complain that there is no story here, but I disagree. They filmed these actors for two weeks every year for 12 years, and yet still managed to make a coherent story out of it. It was very realistic as well.
I related to the movie on a personal level too since I was so familiar with all the filming locations. The parents were very much like my own parents - the mom who struggled to become successful but always seemed to gravitate towards the wrong men, and the dad who was so nice and charming but not around all the time. My dad was also in a band when I was a kid. It was weird how much I could relate to this story.
The movie that I want to watch over and over is Captain America The Winter Soldier, so of the 35 or so movies I saw this year it was the best.
