If you're a fan of the original movie (or the Broadway musical), don't waste your money on the new incarnation. It's pretty lousy.
It might have been a decently cute family movie if they had changed her name, left out the singing and dancing, and recast Miss Hannigan. Quvenzhane Wallis is an outstanding little actress. Of course, she proved that by becoming the youngest person ever to get a Best Actress Oscar nom. I think this movie was beneath her, to be honest. And it highlighted that she's not a singer.
They took a handful of the songs from the original, and tried to update them with autotune and "fresh" lyrics. Then they tried to weave in original material, which was uninspired, to say the least. The result was some really terrible disjointed music.
It had a few cute moments, but not enough to carry the film. Big disappointment. Admittedly, I'm not terribly surprised. But it's still disappointing.
It's a children's movie that should have also appealed to the adults who grew up with the original.
This is an excellent point, and one that's often overlooked by professional reviewers.
Those of us who've ever accompanied our kids to movies can tell you how important it is to at least keep adults interested. Producers would do well to keep that in mind.
BTW, from what I've read so far, this movie is getting panned big-time.
The new movie isn't lousy, though the singing and acting is bad. It's no real Annie. The original is superior to this. However, it's a cute family movie and I think children would like it. For those of us who grew up watching Annie may not be happy with this one especially if you thought the movie was a remake. It's not.
If it wasn't intended to be a remake, they should have given it a different name. But with the same name, and same music (in the previews), people can only assume it's being promoted as a remake.
