Does this count?
I didn't have HBO....I bought a blank VHS tape for $17...gave to
someone with HBO that recorded it for me on a timer while they were sleeping.
"Somewhere In Time"
first vhs I actually bought was maybe "The Craft" I think. actual first movie watched on VHS that wasn't rented some 80's disney films my dad had recorded from tv .
Probably some videotape that was off copyright and cost 99 cents at the drug store - a silent Chaplin film, maybe. I never saw much point in buying movies.
The Searchers, VHS, early 1980s. It cost an absolute fortune, something like $35, and I didn't even have a VCR! I was just so excited to actually be able to own my favorite movie. It was among the first videos ever released. Just imagine, all you young'uns, that there was a time where we movie buffs were left with our memories of a movie, and the odd chance that it might be on TV or playing at a revival theater. Some publisher actually put out entire movie scripts with stills, and that was better than nothing.
I watched Interview With a Vampire in the theater on weekend leave from basic training and was blown away. Had to pick up a copy once on my first assignment.
PRINCESS BRIDE. Will never forget it. Right after we bought our first VCR. We rented it first and had to have it.
