The ending of The Color Purple might not be as hopelessly bleak as the first two hours, but my soul was so completely crushed by then, it didn't matter.

I would like to thank the members here who mentioned The Mist. I never would have seen it. Flew under my radar.

I first saw "The Last American Virgin" when I was a teenager back in the '80s and the ending was devastating. I still think of it as a heartbreaking ending, especially with the song excellent they played at the end.

Top Gun. Goose dies and Tom Cruise doesn't.

Forrest Gump is my favorite movie, and I still get depressed at the end when Jenny, who Forrest has loved and waited his entire life to receive the same feelings from in return, passes away from HIV/AIDS. Tom Hanks 100% deserved that Oscar that year, in a year full of some of the greatest movies of all time. (The Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, etc.)

Blow. The end was just so sad and pathetic plus the fact that it was a true story.

In 'Castaway' Chuck (Tom Hanks) had a soul crushing experience at the end of the movie when after being rescued at sea after leaving on a raft the island on which he had been marooned for years, and hoping to be reunited with his fiancé Kelly (Helen Hunt), he finds that she is married to another man. They both had been the love of each others life, but she thought she would never see him again and had to move on with her life. The thought of her had kept him going while he was on the island, and to find that he had lost her was soul crushing. But he bore it well.
