Another atypical high school film (with the protagonist in Junior High), is Todd Solondz's Welcome to the Dollhouse (1995). It just made my top 10 anyway.

I'd forgotten about Dazed and Confused (awesome 70's music soundtrack) as it's kind of an modern version of American Graffiti and a great throwback of the mid 70's style in that film.
