So somebody revived a thread about bad movies you love. Let's go in the opposite direction. what are the masterpieces/classics that you just can't get with, no matter how wonderful people say they are? I'll start with:
Star Wars -- I saw the original three, enjoyed them and had fun. But I never have to seen any of them again. Ever. It's A Wonderful Life -- Just too corny for words. Raging Bull -- Spending two on-screen hours with a guy just as stupid at the end of the movie as he was at the start. Citizen Kane -- OK. Hearst was screwed-up, and Welles told the story when he was 25. OK. Next? E.T. -- Watching it put me in a sugar coma. Just like IAWL.
What are the great ones you think are less than great?
Avatar - the blue meanies in Sgt. Pepper were more entertaining.
Whatever that was with Fiennes in a concentration camp. Overkill of a genre that had been overkilled.
The Artist - one of the few movies that I just plain shut off.
Ordinary People - those are Ordinary??? Could not relate to the characters in any way except to hope that a serial killer got 'em all in the end.
Most Stephen King movies. Don't find them entertaining
Food Inc. - horribly biased and idiotic treatment of a serious subject
One that I used to like but now find camp - Grapes of Wrath
RAGING BULL. Like rubbing salt in your eyes for 3 hours. But man is it well directed.
THE SOUND OF MUSIC. A three-hour exercise in schmaltz. But beautifully crafted.
2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. Truly genius cinematic art, but as a story it fails on every level. If Kubrick's intent was to show that space is cold, quiet, and boring ... mission accomplished. He crammed 10 minutes of story into what felt like a nine-hour movie.
E.T., I just don't get it and I like Speilberg movies. I can't figure it out. The Grand Budapest Hotel: The movie didn't connect with me. It was like pulling teeth. The Lord of the Rings: I saw about an hour of The Fellowship of the Ring and gave up because it was too slow and plotting for my tastes.
When it came out, "Get Shorty" was hailed as a great comedy. I found it annoying.
Never found any Woody Allen movies funny.
What's crazy is my favorite movies to watch over and over again when it appears on TV didn't do that well at the theater or was panned by critics. One example includes Big Trouble in Little China. Just the right amount of cheesy campy fun. Another Kurt Russell favorite is Escape From New York.
another thread: movies that critics panned when they first came out, but now are classics.
ones everyone likes but I don't:
I am glad someone else doesn't like "It's a wonderful life" I just never got the whole premise of that movie.
"Lego movie" cute, but not great are the 2 I can think of off the top of my head.
