With the big hitters Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone and the lesser action stars Snipes (not as old), Seagal, van Damme, Crowe, and Norris all well over the hill with Bruce Willis following closely, who is the big action star now?

My first thought would be Jason Stratham, but he doesn't make blockbusters. Next thought would be the Avengers stars, but they are in a completely different genre. Liam Neeson seems to be trying to take the crown, but sadly, he really is more over the hill than close to the top too.

So, who is the big cheese of the rock'em sock'em set now?

BTW, notice there are a lot of action stars with last name starting with "S".

Just watched The Dirty Dozen on TCM. My vote is for Charles Bronson. I think there is room for more than one. .....

How can he be a tough guy now when he passed in 2003?

I'd include Tom Hardy with Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham... but it's just a different time now, thanks in part to cg. I guess you can include Colin Firth on the list of action stars, since he starred in one of the memorable action films this year (Kingsman).

Difficult to answer, since action films aren't a preferred genre nowadays. Moviegoers flock to post-apocalyptic films. That being said...I'm giving the title to Liam. I think he has another five or six Taken movies left in him.

Do you mean "tough guy" or "action hero?" Because there is a difference.

Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson, Clint Eastwood, James Coburn ... tough guys.

Arnold Schwarzenneger, Sylvester Stallone, Steven Seagall, John Clude VanDude ... action heroes.

The "tough guy" has almost disappeared from the movies. Clint Eastwood is still around, but he's mostly directing these days. Sam Jackson can pull it off. But even Jason Stratham is more of an action hero than a tough guy in most movies.

noteworthy:

Tom Hardy, Nicolas Winding Refn's Bronson (2008)

Jack O'Connell, David Mackenzie's Starred Up (2014)

Mads Mikkelsen, Nicolas Winding Refn's Valhalla Rising (2009)
