There are plenty of great stories out there, young filmmakers with unique visions, the reason why studios won't bank on them is because they are afraid to lose money. I think the best way is to boycott unoriginal movies.

I personally hate remakes most of them aren't even half way decent movies there are a few exceptions but very few. I've also never understood why they remake recent foreign language movies in english either (the girl with the dragon tatoo, the ring etc..).

My only consideration is if it is a good movie or not. I'd rather see a great remake than a bad original.

Yeah. If there is room for a sequel and the original did enough to l profit to warrant one.

Yes. A friend who's familiar with the film industry told me that the driving force in this is that most big budget movies make their money in overseas markets these days. Studios are preferring to spend money on movies that are guaranteed to translate well in foreign countries. That's why we see so many dopey comicbook hero remakes, and rehashes of films that are guaranteed to be popular because the original is so well known.

Comics aren't the only ones to translate internationally but animated and traditional action does as well. Furious 7 joined the billion dollar club after a 300 million worldwide release weekend without Asia. Frozen became the biggest animated movie ever thanks to international markets. Also remember Taken was actually a French film also shot in English. Then you have take offs like Infernal Affairs becoming The Departed after making it about Whitey Bolger and based around Boston's Irish underworld.

I am beyond sick of it. I said the following on the Scarface Remake thread:

For me personally, anything beyond a very occasional occurrence is bull***.

I know some of you guys have accepted it, because you think movie makers have run out of ideas. Well, do we really need 10 movies to come out every weekend? What if studios saved their money, resources and effort and create fewer, but better quality movies? What would you rather have? I am not saying every movie has to be Titanic or The Godfather, i.e. an instant classic. I mean, just more inspired?

But no...............with them, it's volume that motivates them. Quantity wins over quality, and sadly, that's what we've all come to expect, and ultimately, accept!

You mean the 1983 Brian DePalma movie? You realize that was a remake, right? (And a really bad one.)

I don't get all up in arms about this, simply because there are so many GREAT movies that were remakes. Off the top of my head:

THE THING (remake was better than the original)
THE DEPARTED
THE FLY (remake was better than the original)
KING KONG (remake was better than the original)
INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS
3:10 TO YUMA
The recent PLANET OF THE APES movies
TRUE LIES (remake was better than the original)
INSOMNIA
DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS
THE CHAMP
OCEAN'S ELEVEN
A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS
THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN

I agree there are many great movies that are remakes and sequels. But the ratio of good to bad remakes is paltry. Also, we seem to be in an era where movie and tv makers are at their greediest, and they can't stop churning out trash. You have to sift through to get to the quality productions.
