Saw this today and thought it was really well done. It was unflinching but sensitive at the same time. Much of the story is told in her own voice.
Helpfully, the amazing lyrics to her songs are shown as she sings them, and most interviews are subtitled, which helps with some of the thick British accents.
nightlysparrow...I agree! Oscar material. Amy Winehouse was a musical instrument. I liked how the words to her songs were captioned onscreen. She remained a vulnerable, tragically delicate woman til the very end. I cried for her. But don't let this stop you from seeing this documentary of her life. It was worth it to see her genius, because I had no idea the magnitude of her talent. There was a sinkhole in her heart that consumed her. I would like to know more about her family dynamic, especially with her father.
Where did you see this? I don't see movies typically but am browsing the forum (because I saw Train Wreck this weekend and commented on that)-------- and I was very touched by Amy Winehouse and was really upset when she died.
I was wondering if it was an tv special or if it was at the theatres so thank you for answering. As I said, I am not a big movie goer so I am not aware of what is out there. I will look for this, expecting it to be a more special release theatre in my area.
I am interested in seeing this. It got good reviews in my local paper.
I didn't really become acquainted with her music until after she was dead. I only knew of her because of all the drama that would show up in the media, and at my age, hearing about yet one more druggie/alkie entertainer makes me sort of tune them out. It gets to sound like the same old same old.
However, she really was talented. It's a shame she had those demons.
I just saw this today, and I also highly recommend, I'm sure it will get an Oscar nomination. Very sad and tragic, her voice was amazing. I've listened to Back to Black many times, and it's obvious how much pain she was going through by the lyrics, but seeing this really put it into perspective. I'm glad I got a chance to see her in 2007 at Lollapalooza. Even though it was obvious she had been drinking, she still put on an incredible performance.
