The social themes in his movies would give Charlie Chaplin the edge over Buster Keaton IMO. Chaplin was involved in just about every aspect of production with his films. They were both genius comedians, though.
Their life stories are fascinating and both were very talented.....so I'll have to say "it's a tie."
The physical stunts that Buster was able to do is still impressive. There's a bit
where he puts one foot up on the bar to tie his shoe and then puts the other one up too
(can't find the original).
They were both great entertainers. I just prefer Keaton's laid-back mannerisms to Chaplin's sentimentality. What makes Keaton unforgettable to me is the composure and dignity he maintains in what amounted to a deluge of misfortune.
"The Great Dictator" alone is enough for me to put Chaplin ahead of mere entertainers. The influence of NAZI Germany in Hollywood is well documented and was a major force to fight. If you listen to the start of the storytelling in "Out Of Africa", Streep's story beginning is an homage to another great Chaplin film.
