Why is John Singleton, a brilliant director who made Boyz N the Hood, a classic, praising a pretty awful movie like Straight Outta Compton? I felt that movie was a notch above a bad VH1 bio pic. There were some really cornball scenes in there such as when Dre asks Eazy what he'd name his label and the camera zooms in on him and he just says "ruthless". There was a similar scene at the end where Suge asks Dre what he'd name his new venture and the camera zooms in on him and says "aftermath". That was tut cue for the audience to go YEAHHHH!
The only recognition I give it is good cinematography and direction. The movie did capture the look and feel of 90s LA. Other than that the script was weak but of course it was given a nod for best screenplay.
Have people's tastes changed as to what constitutes a good movie? Are we just engulfed in too much over hype? Or has there been a collective change of preference for films that are not only culturally relevant but pop?
There is just too much complaining about snubbing SOC that it needs to stop. The movie was not best pic material.
The movie wasn't bad but it was definitely way overrated. There was too many characters covering too large of a period of time. So there wasn't any real plot line or central narrative. Also the movie seemed to just end abruptly. I felt like if they had just focused on a specific narrative it would have made a better movie.
It was entertaining. Nothing great by any measure. Definitely needed a better editor. Boyz N the Hood was brilliant and there really is no comparison. Probably couldn't make that movie now.
