7.5/10 on IMDb right now. User reactions appear to be mixed. Not exactly a rockin' start for a new Disney movie, but it'll no doubt score a pile of cash.

How the hell does it not, while Maleficent does?

No idea. I haven't seen either. Yet.

But judging from the previews I've seen, it sure looks like this movie does what every remake ought to try to do: Be different. If you're just going to re-shoot the original with new actors and better special effects, why bother?

I will miss Doc Terminus though. He's still my favorite part of the original.

I haven't watched Maleficent, either, but it sounds like a reinvention to me, more so than Pete's Dragon, which is still going to run with the adults-just-don't-understand theme.

Quote:
A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land's fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal – an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces a battle with the invading king's successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom – and perhaps to Maleficent's true happiness as well.

***SPOILER***

Looks like it's a darker take on the original, after all!

The only reviewer left on ebert.com that I respect, Matt Zoller Seitz' gives it . To avoid spoilers, I'll read the review after I've seen it.

Saw it today. Liked it. Didn't love it. Worth a matinee price.

Respectable showing in my top 20. They (Disney) seemed to give Lowery a lot of leeway to make this movie his, which is glaringly noticeable with the almost total lack of subliminal and blatant references to the issue(s) of the day.
