IOW, he is not a good actor.

Where's Boris when you need him?!

Not to mention, how dumb is subscribing to Scientology?!
I think there are 2 different -- and both valid -- reasons to go to a movie. One is for the story. The other is for the actor(s). A reporter once said to Dean Martin: "Dean, it seems like you're always playing yourself". His response: "Who do you want me to play? Laurence Olivier?" And indeed, I might watch a Dean Martin film for Dean and a Laurence Olivier film for Laurence. Some of the films I've most disliked were where actors suddenly played out of their normal niche.

Why did Cruise take this role? Involves lot of running and looking scared....which he does pretty well. Seems a bit out of character.

I have to agree on Cruise. Don't get me wrong, it looked amazing but he would be a distraction. He's a little too old to be the leading man romantic hero, let alone the action hero. he's got his secret agent niche that's been done to death, same with Matt Damon and Jason Bourne.
Robin Williams ruined Jumanji for me. The story was fantastic and the supporting cast was great all around. But they got a big name actor that seemed to get in the way of the story and distracted from it. A lesser known actor could have let the story take center stage.

I don't know. I really hope this will be good. Hope. But so far the trailers are making this look like RAIDERS OF THE LOST MISSION IMPOSSIBLE OF THE TERMINATOR OF THE CARIBBEAN.

I'm sure I'll see this in the theatre, but I kinda agree about Cruise. I don't dislike him as an actor and I do like him in action roles. I think he gives it his all with the stunts, etc. But when I saw him several months ago in the second Jack Reacher film, I was distracted frequently by how physically dilapidated he seemed. He looked to me like he was trying to conceal it, but he moved like a man who was in TREMENDOUS physical pain, especially in his lower body (ankles, knees, hips). I'm not an expert in anatomy and physiology, so I could be completely wrong. That's just how it looked to me. I have a feeling that in watching The Mummy, I'm going to be distracted for the same reason.

Just the 80s?
I don't think Tom Cruise ever gave a poor performance in the 90s/2000s either.
But yes probably his best performance ever was 1989 (Born On The Fourth Of July).
Was also especially great in-
A Few Good Men (1992)
The Firm (1993)
Jerry Maguire (1996)
Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
Magnolia (1999)
Vanilla Sky (2001)
Minority Report (2002)
The Last Samurai (2003)
Collateral (2004)
War Of The Worlds (2005)
Tropic Thunder (2008)
Valkyrie (2008)
Rock Of Ages (2012)
Edge Of Tomorrow (2014)
