I would lean very much toward Stuart Whitman, but no, for me it's Lee Van Cleef. Why him and not Wayne? Because with Wayne, it becomes all about him and not the movie.

Another oldie was the lovely Dale Robertson.. with his black jacket , trousers and matching hat.....oooh he was my schoolgirl crush, Ty Hardin was a bit alright too.

I applaud those choices and cannot quibble --- except perhaps to point out that they rarely played "cowboys" per se. They played gunfighters. And no one did it better.

For cowboys, I have to go with Robert Duvall.
