I am going to try and watch this again, but my first reaction to it was pure boredom. Not because there wasn't any action, but because I thought the main actress was just awful. I didn't find myself interested in her story in any way. After reading through this thread, I am going to give it another shot.

I actually thought Amy Adams was the biggest bright spot in the movie.
I thought this was exceptionally well-done Sci-Fi movie
Amy Adams is always able to pull off "smart" and she also showed great deal of vulnerability with her reactions to the alien species...
Thought Jeremy was out of his depth
The plot was complicated and people likely were not expecting to have to pay attention--
Just thought it would be straightforward storyline...
I saw the "hook" fairly early on and waited for it to play out
My husband didn't nor did friend who went with us
So it took some explaining...
I don't know if the "twist" were made MORE evident the movie would have been improved--
I think it would have seemed belabored if that had happened...
Being she's a linguist, and this is primarily about language, communication, I've always liked this exchange between mother and daughter, from Ted Chiang's book, Story of Your Life:
Mom, can I ask you something?
Sure sweetie, go ahead.
Can I be, um, honored?
What do you mean?
At school Sharon said she got to be honored.
Really? Did she tell you what for?
It was when her big sister got married. She said only one person could be, um, honored, and she was it.
Ah, I see. You mean Sharon was maid of honor?
Yeah, that's it. Can I be made of honor?
