Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a one-star film on a good day. (watched, Mark Hamill)

And they don't do them because they're a niche market,
You think Rogue One will do poorly?
I highly doubt it.
The real problem is the Disney knows they could film the i can has cheezburger cat and call it Star Wars and everybody would show up and pay millions of dollars.
Alright, someone please educate me here. I do not understand all the hate targeted at this film. I saw it and liked it for what it was.
Having said that, I am not a Star Wars fan (I am a Trekie). To me the Star Wars franchise is just a bunch of movies. I haven't seen the tv series, specials, collected the toys, comic books or read novels. But I have seen all the films.
i rented it and have been thinking of giving it another go on bluray this time with extras but last time i only half watched which could be my fault or the movies not sure on the whole though yeah its not like the classics or movies from the 2000s i hope the next one is better but i hear jar jar is back which is... meh

The only "daring" thing they did was have the new villain take off his mask, which was also the wrong thing to do.
I agree on this one. That, and he is crying (!) at one point. Also, why is it early in the movie he's a complete bad-ass who can hold laser blasts in mid-air while carrying on a conversation, and can knock people out with the Force, but at the end fought to a stalemate with a tiny female with no training in the Jedi ways. I'm guessing he had trained. Made no sense.
The reason is - it's Disney feminizing a beloved franchise. "Must have a female fighter equal to the males! Check." "Males should be buffoons! Check."
I am an old fan of the Edgar Rice Burroughs books of Mars & the John Carter character, and they did the same thing to that movie, making Dejah Thoris a warrior princess. No, no, can't leave her as written, a damsel in distress, that won't fly anymore.
Darth Jar-Jar is disturbed by your lack of lak-laks.
Oh, you're just a hateful old fart that doesn't like jar-jar.
Pointing out bad things in Star Wars?!?! Burn the witch! Burn the witch!
