They did use real actors for motion-capture.

Been a Planet of the Apes fan since the originals. Watched the Saturday morning cartoon as a kid, and even still have old comic books of it. The new ones haven't disappointed me. "War" looks good. They've really tweaked the plots from the originals, they're similar, but a lot more detail has gone into how the apes came to be and how their culture evolved.

Plus the ape caste system is different, with the Chimpanzees being the leaders and warriors more than the Gorillas, and the Oranutans are still intellectuals, but subservient to the Chimps. In the originals the Chimpanzees were at the bottom of ape society for having any influence and power. At least insofar as the final evolution of their culture went.

The movie is being touted as one of the best movies in a decade. I may have to go see it.

Good. Sad. I cried -- theatre crying, so it was all quiet and sniffly and suppressed. If I'd been at home, I would have really bawled.
