Two massively overrated movies, both directed by the same guy who also made other blockbusters that aren't aging well, like Terminator 2: Judgment Day and The Abyss.
Ditto on TITANIC and AVATAR. And I say that as a fan of Cameron. His earlier movies number amongst some of my favorites.
Others:
BEACHES. Watching this qualifies as cruel and unusual punishment.
THE MATRIX. All style. No substance.
THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. Other than Joseph Gordon Levitt, this movie is almost unwatchable in its sheer awfulness.
THE ENGLISH PATIENT. The single-most pretentious movie of the '90s. You know your heroes are unlikeable when the audience actually wants the Nazis to kill them.
AMERICAN BEAUTY. A very stylish movie with great acting that doesn't say much in the end.
DEADPOOL. If a thirteen-year-old virgin who did nothing but watch internet porn all day long were given $58 million to make a movie, this is what it would look like.
I hated Avatar too. About as subtle as rhubarb pie.
I walked out o the theater during George Clooneys "The Descendants" Disliked or hated every character in that, especially the foul mouthed and petulant kids.
I'm not sure whether popular = well reviewed, but here's my brief off the top of my head list covering both:
Star Wars the original--I never understood what the big deal was, and Princess Leia is NOT my princess
The English Patient
Chariots of Fire
Arrival--colorless in every sense of the word
The Gift (2015)--a humdrum rehash of every other Lifetime movie ever made
Gravity--would have been fine if the two main actors weren't over the hill and way too famous to be realistic
Lord of the Rings--I wonder if I'm the only person in the nation who has seen all but the last 12 minutes of the trilogy; I was interrupted as I was viewing it on DVD and I never cared enough to go back and watch the end
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them--so murkily filmed that sometimes I had no idea of what I was watching, plus the two lead actresses looked exactly alike to me
Also, Steel Magnolias. I so badly wanted to walk out but my friend was into it.
