It is listed as the best overall movie so far of 2017. After seeing it on Saturday night I would agree. I cannot remember the last time I went to the movies and could not stop thinking and talking about it after????

Wow it looks like it is really well-made and original. I can't wait to see it.

What genre would that be? I've seen the movie and I enjoyed it, but it contains standard horror /suspense tropes.

Same question. Standard thriller. One old trope ("stuff jumps at you") seems to have been tossed in as a coy wink to the audience.

It is not a horror movie and does not fit into any easy gendre. It is a metaphor for slavery, the way black bodies were captured, used, and their humanity was erased into a sunken space. Yes there is much to talk about the movie.

Being metaphorical is not unknown in the horror genre. There was a reason why Dawn of the Dead was about zombies in a shopping mall.

I look forward to seeing this when it opens in Australia next month. The trailer intrigues me in a Shirley Jackson sort of way.

All of that is true but it is not anything new per se. What you're describing are protest films or morality plays. Most of the sci fi movies from the 1950s were protest allegories against the cold war, McCarthyism, and nuclear war. Gene Roddenberry designed Star Trek as morality plays.

Yes, Get Out had a unique message not seen in many contemporary movies. However, the techniques used in the movie were pretty standard.
