"The Andromeda strain" (theater, action, cast, horror)

Anyone see this classic movie? I really enjoyed the scientific approach they used. not having to dumb down the dialog. Its a movie that really makes you think and a movie you have to pay attention to. I really wish they would make movies like this nowadays. And of course, i am referring to the 1970's version, not the ultra pc rainbow cast remake

It played well, back in the day. I watched it a year ago and it stood up fairly well. The science is a bit silly, and the basic plot is similar to War of The Worlds, but with water substituting for germs as the resolving factor. Mostly it is a puzzle box movie, where an elaborate puzzle box is set up and the goal is to somehow defeat it or get out of it.

I like this movie, but I genuinely enjoy "eco-horror" movies of that era, like Phase IV, The Crazies, Long Weekend, etc.

Watched it as part of Friday night horror about 2-3 weeks ago.

I remember seeing it in the theater on Clark AFB when it came out and thinking then, knowing now, it was one movie that keeps one on the edge of their seat.

And then, much later on, loved how James Olson played "Thane" in "The Gun on Ice Planet Zero". Have quite a few of his performances, here and there.

I watched it on first release and always thought it was fascinating in a lot of ways, especially the depiction of how "stuff happens."

I liked the movie as it did seem 'realistic'.
It followed the book quite closely, which was even more 'realistic'. (It was written totally like a military de-brief, rather than a SciFi novel).

Yes, very true. It had the feel of a detailed after-action report.


The later television miniseries adaptation, with all the government conspiracy theory hoo-haw, was much inferior.

I liked it, still do, for presenting itself as serious and plausible.

Michael Crichton, the author of "The Andromeda Strain", was quite prolific.

He also penned:
