I agree with the Variety article. I thought it was odd having this type of film released in August instead of September.
Fall movies are overloaded with 'big, important, Oscar-bait dramas'. The distributors probably thought that Detroit would've been lost in the crowd if they waited until September.
Still, I think this movie would've played better if released in the spring. I wish Hollywood would realize that there are 9 other months in the year where moviegoers would enjoy going to the theatre to watch interesting, adult dramas and not have to wait until September to see any of them.
I don't blame theater owners one bit. Detroit looks like the kind of movie that could inflame racial tensions and possibly cause some violence and other problems in theaters. No thanks!
I just watched the movie. It’s very emotional but well acted. It’s on Hulu. For a bunch of 17-18 year old kids to endure that night and the outcome... is heart wrenching. I was born about 20 years later so these people could still be around. You just never know what someone is going/ has been through.
