Movies that were very popular at the time, like Silkwood and Missing (Jack Lemmon one). Not on Netflix or Amazon Video.

They're available on Amazon right now.

Silkwood is available on Blu-ray and DVD.

Missing is available on standard DVD only, but has been reissued by Criterion as a double-disc with lots of bonus content.

This movie was on HBO about 9 times a week when I was a kid. Now it is impossible to find.

You're running into one of the biggest limitations of streaming: what's available at any given moment is limited, and changes all the time. Because of the way digital rights work, it's not possible for companies like Netflix and Amazon to build up a growing digital library for streaming the way they can with rental DVDs.

Though the argument could be made that there's a LOT more readily available now than during the rental DVD era. As of March 2016 (according to the first article I pulled up) Amazon offered about 20,000 movies and TV shows via streaming. Netflix had about 7,000 movies and TV shows. Hulu had roughly 10,000 titles. Sure, there's plenty of overlap between the three, but I doubt that many (if any) brick-and-mortar rental stores could rival those numbers.

HOLY SH*T. I was just thinking of that movie the other day!

Here it is on YouTube (lots of these types of forgotten flicks show up there).

But Netflix has over 90,000 titles available on DVD. (https://www.quora.com/How-big-is-the...eaming-library). So your argument doesn't hold.
