At the beginning of the movie, a starts a fire in his fireplace and then leaves his house to get get beer. When he returns, he finds that the entire house caught on fire from the fire he started, and that though his wife was rescued, his three kids died. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like a 50s - 60s sci fi story about what motivated a guy to build a time machine.

Interesting. That's definitely the exact story in Manchester. The only difference is it doesn't happen at the beginning of the movie.

Probably not the same one but in the late 80's-early 90's there was a Made for TV movie where a dad burned his house down to kill his son but the son lived with terrible burn damage. Think it was based on a true story.

Anyone know that one?

Sounds like the David Rothenberg story. The 1988 TV movie David?
