I just read that The Pacific HBO series was budgeted for 100 million and ended up around 200 mill.
WESTWORLD's pilot episode ran $25 million. Subsequent episodes were in the neighborhood of $20 million each.
But that would be cheap compared to what DUNE needs. Every costume would have to be original, and the plot requires 3 different planets with entirely different eco-systems. You can't do stuff like that on the cheap, because it comes out looking ridiculous. But you could do it on a GAME OF THRONES budget if you filmed in Europe and Africa rather than Hollywood.

Real question is could Dune pull in game of thrones level viewing numbers? Science Fiction in general isn't always super profitable unless you want to count Star Wars.

Science fiction is very profitable if it is good --- on both TV and movies. Star Trek, ALIEN in all its incarnations, Terminator, Predator, The Expanse, Battlestar Galactica, etc., etc., etc.
It is Fantasy that has struggled to find an audience over the years. GAME OF THRONES never would have made it on TV without the success of THE LORD OF THE RINGS movies.
I hope I'm wrong, but unless this movie's 4.5 hours long, or Denis leaves out vast chunks of exposition, it's probably not going to work that well as a self-contained feature.
You know, the fact that they are willing to remake Overboard should tell you how little originality is left in Hollywood.
Yikes! And upstage Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn?
