WHAT IS GOOD ABOUT THE MOVIE

The leads. Mark Hamill's best performance ever. Daisy Ridley shines. Oscar Isaac is great (even though his character is badly written). Ditto with Adam Driver. Ditto with John Boyega and his sidekick. It's hard to tell if Laura Dern and Carrie Fisher are actually good in the movie, because their characters are such a mess. Benicio Del Toro is just ... weird.

The kids. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed those three slave kids. In fact, I probably would have liked the movie more had they cut everything with Poe, Finn, Leia, and the Alliance and given us a story about Luke, Rey, and those kids.

The cinematography. This is a beautiful movie to look at.

Rey's parents. Exactly the right decision.

WHAT IS BAD ABOUT THE MOVIE

Again, chapters could be written on this, but in short:

The basic premise of 3/4 of the plot makes no sense at all. What do the bad guys want? Why? How could idiots this incompetent actually command a military? What do the good guys want? Why?

Most of the plot is lifted straight out of EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and RETURN OF THE JEDI.

Whoever wrote Luke Skywalker's role in this movie COMPLETELY misunderstood his character arc in Episodes IV, V, and VI.

The Alliance is led by idiots. The First Order is led by bigger idiots.

The dialogue goes beyond bad in places. It is actually hilariously bad in places.

The humor. I don't mind humor in STAR WARS or in action movies in general. But the humor in this movie was cartoony and false.

Porgs. Only in this movie to sell toys. They serve no other purpose.

Snoke and Phasma. I have no idea why they were even in episodes VII and VIII. They accomplished nothing.
I agree with all of this. Rey's parents being noones doesn't bother me too much at all. I thought that was actually well done. Star Wars was never Maury, so I could never cared who her father was.

But yeah, everything in the bad, I agree with. Like honestly, what were the Resistance even escaping and where were they going?

Also....didn't they JUST blow up Starkiller Base? Because doesn't this movie take place seconds after TFA? That part had me lost that the Resistance were escaping the FO, with no real context behind to what was even happening.

Also, the humor killed the movie to me. I don't mind subtle humor, but when Poe used a joke from the Verizon Commercials at the beginning, I knew the tone just felt completely off.

I also want to add Finn to the list of cons. He was decently written in TFA that I actually cared that he got hurt in the last movie. In this movie...he...goes on a videogame mission to find solve some codes, meets this random girl, and gives the audience a message from PETA to not harm space horses? His whole arc was a waste.

But yeah, big time, my biggest gripe is how they did Luke. Why would Luke try to kill his own nephew when he sensed a bit of darkness in him...WHEN THE ENTIRE ARC OF THE OT WAS LUKE REDEEMING HIS VERY EVIL SPACE DAD?!?! It's just like ugh....did they not watch the OT at all. That was probably the biggest wtf of the entire movie.

"The Alliance is led by idiots. The First Order is led by bigger idiots."

Classic! I love it!

It about sums up human politics.

Does anyone actually believe that Rey's parents were drunken junk dealer nobodies? There is still another whole movie left to go in this trilogy. I would be shocked if they don't have a big reveal on who her parents are in Ep 9.

That's what kills me about a lot of the criticism. Much of it is about glaring plot holes and things that weren't resolved but we still have an entire episode of this story to go. Do you really thing the only thing they are saving for that is Rey and Kylo squaring off again in a light saber duel?

That was the most fun episode since 2nd flick - Empire Strikes Back.

And Kylo stepped up to become what promises to be a great bad guy.
The next one should be great.

She's Lando's daughter. And her mom is Babs...

...Streisand.

I thought Luke milking the alien space cow was a bold and daring direction for the Star Wars franchise.

Except I'm almost certain he is going to turn to the light for the Return of the Jedi style happy ending. Substitute singing and dancing porgs for ewoks

Right up there with Kylo's shirtless creepy Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment of Rey. Definitely a few bizarre choices

That kind of stuff bothers me because time is treated in Star Wars like real time on Earth, and distances are negligible. We get the sense that Rey is with Luke for weeks. We think Finn and Rose are gone for 48 hours. Yet everything aboard the cruisers seems to be taking place over hours.

Are you referring to the final scene, before the credits? Chopped nuts on the whipped cream we already had to wade through to get to the cake. You want half a movie about three kids being reared to join the Alliance?
Oh yes, let's not forget Jake Lloyd 2.0. Clearly the next great hope for the Jedi and I'm sure he'll be the main character in Ep 10-12. Hopefully they will jump ahead enough in time that he'll be an adult by then because I definitely can't sit through another movie with child lead

That scene was unintentionally hilarious. "Show us what you're made of, A.D.!"
